CURLY HAIRCARE: THINGS TO PAY ATTENTION DURING THE SUMMER

Summer is here and you feel like going out and just enjoying yourself. This is the time you feel like putting your summer dress on, letting your hair down and just enjoying the warm weather and all the best parts of summer. Unfortunately, we often forget that certain things can damage our hair during the summer, and we should pay more attention to these. Know these facts to better protect your hair from damaged.

Sun, saltwater, sand, and chlorine can damage your hair. Damaged hair has a dry look and feel. Damaged hair also is unmanageable and won’t hold a curl or style.

Sun, Saltwater, Chlorine, and sand can damage the part of the hair called the cuticle. Hair structure consists of three layers called the medulla, the cortex, and cuticle. The medulla is the innermost layer and may even be absent especially in fine, or light blonde hair. The cortex provides strength, moisture, color, and texture. The cuticle is the outermost layer that protects the cortex. It is a hard shingle-like layer of overlapping cells, like scales. Damage of cuticle leads to dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness.

SUN is a source of D-vitamin, but too much sun leads to fragile and brittle hair- Your hair needs vitamin D, but where can you get vitamin D from? From the sun of course! But too much sun lightens the color of your hair and makes your hair brittle and fragile. So how can you minimize the sun hair damage? By using a hat or scarf under the sun is good because it blocks ultra-violet radiation that can be damaging to your hair and scalp. Using conditioner is extremely important to protect the cuticle, to limit the heat from the sun! It’s important to note that you can also get vitamin D from supplements, vitamin D-fortified food, and foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D.

SALTWATER may dehydrate your hair and make it even dryer- Saltwater can be beneficial in some ways but not for your hair. Saltwater can “dehydrate” if too much moisture from your hair is evaporated. This dehydration of the hair will continue if you don’t moisture your hair after exposing it to saltwater. Seawater is osmotic meaning that it leaches water out of your hair because of its high salt content. It makes your hair dry, parched and brittle. The hair becomes tangled, dull, rough-feeling and creates a hard texture, especially if you have a color in your hair. It can be hard to comb or brush out. You might have noticed that it gets hard for your locks to curl or hold a style. In extreme cases, saltwater will cause ends of your hair to split.

CHLORINE strips your natural hair oils and leads to rough and damaged hair- Your hair is coated in its own natural oil which helps it to remain smooth and healthy. Chlorine strips your hair of these oils leaving your hair dry, rough and damaged. It can also spark chemical reactions in your hair changing the natural color of your hair, causing split ends, and weakening each hair strand.

SAND will cause your scalp itching- If you happen to go to the beach and end up getting sand in your hair it will not damage the texture of your hair, but it is not nice feeling having it in your hair next to your scalp. It will most likely cause you itching which in turn can create small open wounds. These wounds can be gateways to bacteria and subsequently lead to infections and that is not what we want. Also, sand in your hair might make it look like you have dandruff.

What to do if you want to be outside during the summer but don’t want a headful of frizzy, dull and damaged hair? Wear a hat to protect your hair from the sun. If you swim in a chlorinated pool, make sure you rinse the pool water out of your hair with clear water and use moisturizing conditioner like Sumilayi Leave-in conditioner for moisturire balance.
